Highway Geometric Design AutoCAD Civil 3D (2009) Tutorial
A short tutorial will introduce you to the
critical functions one may use in Civil 3D to do highway design. This is by no means an exhaustive discussion
of the subject, but should be enough to get you started. Additional questions can be directed to the instructor
You should run AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009. If prompted, indicate that you will use Civil 3D Complete, as this will
provide you with access to all the Civil 3D functions we will need. Once you have started, you will then see
something like the following screen.
When AutoCAD describes a roadway, it uses the term â Alignmentâ to describe the horizontal alignment, and
â Profileâ to describe the vertical alignment. This is slightly different than common lingo in highway design,
where we just tend to talk about both horizontal and vertical alignments.
When you click â Create Profile Viewâ to create the profile, Civil 3D will prompt you to select a location in the
.dwg file where to put this profile view. Note: The point you select within the .dwg file becomes the bottom left
corner of the profile drawing, so choose the point carefully. Above or to the right of the surface is good. Try not
to overwrite other useful things in the drawing file.
