To use this tutorial, you should have knowledge of working with programs written for the Windows environment: opening and saving files and navigating on your computer. You should be familiar with structural analysis programs utilized in structural engineering design. You must have AutoCAD 2000 (or later) and the Structural Desktop program or demo properly installed. The file TUTORIAL.STD should be copied to your AutoCAD 2000 folder. (TUTORIAL.HLD for users of SDT LT) You will get maximum benefit from following along on the computer while reading this Tutorial, and taking the steps with us.
The method we will use in the Tutorial will be referred to as the "Right-Click Menu". This is referred to as the "Context-Sensitive Menu" in some Microsoft literature. To see the menu, click the right-most button on your two-or-three button mouse. To select from the menu, click the left button on the command you wish to enter.
tructural Desktop LT uses Hold files to save your work between sessions. These hold files may be exchanged with other users of Structural Desktop, or Structural Desktop LT. We provide you with a hold file so that you can proceed directly with the Tutorial without having to build a model exactly like the one we use, with the same numbering scheme. Refer to the Structural Desktop manual section Change Line to Member or Change Face to Element for more information on how to build a Model from AutoCAD lines and faces.
